The Treasures of Western Sardinia
Western Sardinia and the Gulf of Oristano hold authentic natural gems, such as the Sinis Peninsula, with its turquoise waters and the famous white quartz beach of Is Arutas, resembling grains of rice. Not to be missed is also the archaeological area of Tharros, an ancient Phoenician-Punic city located on the promontory of Capo San Marco, where you can walk among ruins overlooking the sea. Nearby, the Cabras lagoon is a paradise for birdwatching enthusiasts, hosting numerous species of migratory birds, including the iconic pink flamingos.
In the inland areas of this region, visitors can discover villages rich in traditions, such as San Vero Milis and Cabras, known for local crafts and authentic gastronomy. The mullet roe from Cabras, Vernaccia di Oristano DOC wines, and fish-based dishes from the lagoons are unforgettable culinary experiences. Before leaving this area, you must visit the majestic Tower of San Giovanni di Sinis, a coastal sentinel offering breathtaking views, or the Church of San Giovanni di Sinis, one of the oldest Christian buildings on the island, standing as a silent witness to over 1500 years of Sardinian history.
